Welsh Black Cattle

What is the meat quality of Welsh Black cattle like?

Today’s consumers increasingly demand lean, quality beef that has been produced under conditions

as natural as possible, and without the aid of growth promoters and other artificial stimulants.

Welsh Blacks fit the bill perfectly because of their capability of finishing at heavy weights without

putting on excess fat. Buchanan Park took part in the Pakenham show Hoof & Hook competition in 2017.

Their steer won the heavy class 390kg to 450 kg live weight. He was placed 4th in the live class, and when dressed

on the hook he took out 1st place from 17 animals in his class with a MSA score of 91 points.

Fertility

Genetic fertility is good and can be maintained at the standard 283 days even under tough conditions. Most heifers will begin to cycle under one year of age.

Mature Welsh Black bulls weigh from 950 to 1100kg. They reach puberty early and are vigorous and fertile breeders. They are capable and willing to travel rough country to get the job done.

Longevity

The Welsh Black cows are considered to be in their prime between 10 and 15 years of age. They can live up to 23 years, so you do not have to regularly replace your good cows.

Temperament

Welsh Black cattle are quiet and easily handled.

Ease of calving

Calving difficulties are minimal due to the large pelvic arch. Lactation periods are long and the milk flow even.

Polled or unpolled

Welsh Black cattle can be horned or naturally polled.

How do they do on rough country

The hardy Welsh Black has a thick hair coat that can remain long or sleek depending on the climate. They have tough, hard black hooves that are less prone to injury and their rumen is capable of breaking down relatively course fibre.
